About

Welcome to the Uppingham Community College website.
We are very proud of our history and heritage, but we are very much a forward-thinking school.

Uppingham Community College is a successful and inclusive Single Academy Trust. Our key values as a school community are: Respect, Honesty and Kindness. Everything we do is based upon these simple core principles.

We are committed to the highest standards of education and have invested in staff, facilities and resources to ensure all of our students acquire the knowledge and skills required to succeed in an ever-changing world.

We offer a curriculum which delivers a truly great all round education for our students and we continually focus on developing teaching and learning by focussing on educational research and investing in staff development.

At Uppingham Community College we put the student at the heart of everything we do. Our vision as a school is simple:

Everyone at UCC thrives, making excellent progress in their learning, achievement and development.

As teachers, leaders and as parents ourselves, we understand the importance of young people feeling safe and happy at school. We work tremendously hard to ensure the environment at UCC is welcoming, positive, safe and focussed on learning. We are relentlessly aspirational for our students and we want them to achieve the highest possible standards of academic excellence, alongside becoming amazing young adults.

Uppingham Community College is a wonderful place to learn and to work and we hope our website will give you an insight into our fantastic school.

Ben Solly
Principal

Uppingham Community College is an oversubscribed secondary school in the rural county of Rutland, with 900 students on roll.

UCC has consistently achieved GCSE results that are significantly above the national average in terms of student attainment. Our students achieved an exceptional set of GCSE results in 2022; equalling the best ever in the history of the school and exceeding previous records in some aspects. Our Progress 8 score for UCC in 2022 was 0.42 and our Attainment 8 5.7.

GCSE grades have changed and instead of A*-G, students now receive a numerical grade with Grade 9 the highest and Grade 1 the lowest. Grade 4 is considered a ‘standard pass’ and is the equivalent of the ‘old’ C Grade.

Below are the statistics from our recent GCSE results:

Achieving these superb standards is a result of excellent teaching, unrivalled pastoral care and a relentlessly aspirational attitude from the staff at Uppingham Community College.

UCC places significant importance on the holistic development of young people and delivers this through a comprehensive pastoral support structure, a broad and balanced curriculum and an outstanding enrichment programme. Student destination data for UCC is strong and the Careers Education Independent Advice and Guidance provided ensures students are guided towards the most appropriate post 16 pathways. All Year 10 students participate in Work Experience in the summer term.

Vision:

To ensure everyone at UCC thrives, making excellent progress in their learning, achievement and development.

Values:

Respect. Honesty. Kindness.

These simple and memorable values underpin everything we do as a school. They help guide our decision making and ensure we place staff and students at the heart of everything we do.

Ethos:

At UCC our ethos is inclusive, highly aspirational and person focussed. We believe that by creating the conditions for our staff to thrive, our students will be provided with a truly great education and in turn, they too with thrive and succeed. We believe in the capacity for continual improvement and use a growth mindset philosophy to focus on always striving to learn and grow.

School Leadership

Our Senior Leadership Team (SLT) consists of our Principal, Mr Solly, three Deputy Principals, Mr Anderson, Mr Brooks and Mrs Duffy, Assistant Principal Mr Rhodes, Associate Assistant Principal Marian Wiggan and Finance Director Mrs Croote. The SLT are support by an Extended Leadership Team consisting of nine Heads of Department who oversee the curriculum and standards in each subject.

Pastoral Organisation

The holistic development of students is central to our vision ‘to ensure everyone at UCC thrives, making excellent progress in their learning, achievement and development’.

Our Pastoral Team consists of 5 Progress Leaders, one for each year group who monitor the academic progress of students, 2 Personal Development Coaches and 1 Behaviour Support Practitioner who work with students and their families to provide support and holistic guidance.

Students are placed in tutor groups and spend 15 minutes each day with their tutor. Our aim is for tutors to follow their tutor through from Year 7 to 11 so that we are able to build strong relationships with families. More information can be found by clicking here.

Student Voice

Student voice is important and high profile at UCC. From our Head Boy and Head Girl and their Student Leadership Team, through to our Student Council and Form Representatives; we give all students the opportunity to have a say in how our school develops and evolves.

Governors

The role of the Governing Body is to support, challenge and be a ‘critical friend’ in relation to the work and future development of the College and the wider community. Good governance requires involvement in strategy and policy development; ensures sound personnel and financial management; measures performance and supports the pursuit of challenging medium and short term goals.

The work of the Governing Body is facilitated through Full Governor Meetings, various Committees, plus Special Area and Curriculum Links. Governors are also involved in other day-to-day activities in support of the Principal and Staff as required. For more information on UCC governance please click here.

Extra-Curricular

At UCC we believe strongly in a comprehensive, diverse and exciting education; extra-curricular provision is central to achieving this. Students participate in an extensive range of extra-curricular activities and have opportunities to experience learning outside of the school environment through various educational visits. UCC provides students with the opportunity to take the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award up to Silver and the most able students in Key Stage 4 can study the Higher Project qualification.
