Dear students, parents and carers

It’s no secret amongst the UCC community, that I am an avid fan of Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club. My happiest childhood memories are of times when I would attend matches with my dad, a tradition I now continue with my own son Joe. The city of Wolverhampton has a motto ‘out of darkness cometh light’ and this is something that has always resonated with me - never more so than in these past few weeks.

Just over three weeks ago our school was on fire. Firefighters, many of whom are former UCC students, bravely tackled the blaze and prevented the fire from spreading further into the school. This event hurt our school community deeply; the upset and pain felt by current and former staff, students and parents has been palpable. This school clearly means a great deal to many people.

Since then, our fire recovery team have moved heaven and earth to get UCC back on its feet. The staff have pulled off a remarkable feat, digging deep into our reserves of resilience and resolve, overcoming significant barriers, problems and setbacks, in order to get our children back to school. I have been truly humbled by the incredible attitude, professionalism and dedication of the people who have made this possible. To unashamedly pull another quote from my beloved football team, ‘the strength of the wolf is in the pack’ - Team UCC is stronger because we work together, and together we have overcome the greatest challenge our school has ever faced.

I am delighted to inform you that today we welcome all staff back to UCC as we make our final preparations for students returning next week. I have missed my colleagues and I am excited to get back to working with them and re-establishing our fantastic school culture. From Monday next week we welcome students back to UCC; it has been a long time coming and I cannot wait to see them.

None of this would have been possible without the overwhelming support we have received from our school community. The positives messages and acts of kindness we have received from students, parents, alumni and local community members has kept us all going and we are very grateful. One quote from a student really struck a chord with me “our school is more than just a building, it is so much more than that. Our school is about the people connected by it. Our school is about our core values and how it shapes the lives of us, the students. Bricks and mortar might hold our building together, but our community is bonded by our love for UCC and the values we live by.”

We still have a huge amount of work ahead of us and we cannot forget we are still in the midst of a pandemic; this will unquestionably be a challenging year that will continue to test us all. However, I have never been more confident that collectively, our school community will overcome the challenges ahead and we will emerge stronger, wiser and more united than ever.

Today, we step out of the darkness and into the light.
