THE R.E. CURRICULUM AT UCC

At Uppingham Community College the R.E. curriculum across Key Stage 3 and 4 provides students with the opportunity to study a wide range of themes, concepts and faiths within their local area, at a national level and global level. Specifically students gain knowledge of different faiths, the cultures and practices within the faiths and develop an understanding of those involved and affected by those faiths. Students also analyse and evaluate the religions and compare them with others to gain more understanding of the themes studied. They develop their evaluative skills in a range of assessments.

Below are two examples of this in practice:

Knowledge: When studying Prejudice in Year 8 the curriculum covers the facts about the different types of prejudice and the influential figures involved throughout history combatting racism, religious discrimination and sexism to name but a few. This will provide the knowledge of what the themes are.

Understanding: Students will understand the similarities of the different types and the links they have together.

Skill: Students will build on their knowledge of discrimination and develop this knowledge routinely in the classroom through the skills of enquiry, analysis and evaluation.

Knowledge: When studying Islam in the GCSE curriculum students covers the facts about the faiths. How Muslims view Marriage, Matters of life and death, how they live and pray.

Understanding: Students will understand the practices of each faith and are regularly assessed for understanding of the themes they learn in the knowledge phase.

Skill: Students will build on their knowledge of Islam and develop this knowledge routinely in the classroom through the skills of enquiry, analysis and evaluation.
