THE HOME COOKING CURRICULUM AT UCC

At Uppingham Community College the Home Cooking BTEC curriculum across Key Stage 4 is designed to teach students practical cooking skills, food safety, nutrition, and meal planning. It helps learners develop confidence in preparing healthy, affordable meals and encourages independent living skills. The qualification is offered at level 1 in year 10 and level 2 in year 11, with level 2 building on the skills developed in level 1. It is fully assessed through an evidence-based portfolio. Students develop and master a wide set of practical skills, gaining confidence and independence in applying their knowledge and understanding of food preparation and nutrition. They will learn how to prepare and cook a variety of healthy meals, develop an understanding of food hygiene and kitchen safety, plan meals, shop economically and use ingredients effectively.
Below are two examples of this in practice:
Knowledge: Students will learn how to prepare and cook a variety of healthy meals.
Understanding: Students will be able to understand what makes up a healthy meal and the steps involved in food preparation.
Skill: Students will demonstrate their ability using kitchen utensils, including knife skills when applicable.
Knowledge: Students will learn how to budget effectively with meal planning, considering seasonal variations and locally produced food.
Understanding: Students will be able to understand the different costs involved with meal planning whilst ensuring the meals relate to the Eatwell Guide.
Skill: Students will demonstrate their knowledge and understanding through the ability to plan and prepare a variety of dishes whilst keeping to a budget, including being able to cater for others and their needs.
