Seismologist shakes up students ideas about earthquakes

On the 13th October seismologist Paul Denton from the British Geological Survey gave a large group of students a good account of the recent Mexico Earthquake.

Using both video footage and maps combined with homemade models he was able to explain to our Cookie Club how shock waves triggered in an earthquake can bring down buildings and also why it is not always the highest buildings that collapse.

This was also a fascinating insight into the work of the BGS which will be remembered by students for years to come.
